There is the gate where the track leaves the road, the front door, the back door to the terrace, a store for tools, the room with the pump and the pool house. They were fitted at different times, by different people, and many sit locked for months. Montesol is the one settlement the national statistics office counts apart from the town: 137 registered residents in 2025, against 40 in 2010. The urbanisations the sources name are Santa Elena, San Isidro, Mirador de La Alcaná and Montesol II, where new detached villas with private pools are still going up in Santa Elena. Beyond them lie the parajes: Alcaná, El Tolomó, La Ofra, El Aljau, Uchel, El Azafá, Upanel, Los Algezares and more. Alcaná sits between Aspe and La Romana, and some of the country houses for sale round the town date from the 19th century. Several are advertised to British, Dutch and German buyers, and a house whose owners live part of the year elsewhere has lock problems of its own. ## The locks a finca actually has ### The gate on the track A padlock on a chain, a lock box welded to a steel gate, or an electric gate with a manual release. Opened, repaired or replaced; an electric motor itself is a job for the gate installer. ### The house doors Front doors of older country houses often have a mortice lock in a heavy wooden door; newer villas use euro cylinders and multipoint locks, the same as in town. They hold expensive things and often have the weakest locks on the property: a hasp and a padlock, or a cheap rim lock. Before a long absence, check that every lock turns smoothly with its key, and ask about anything that already drags: a worn lock is better changed in May than forced in October. Can the locks be done while we are away? Only with somebody there to let the locksmith in and to check the work: a neighbour, a caretaker or a friend you trust, with your written say-so on WhatsApp or by email. The new keys are handed to that person, or kept as you arrange. ### The gate on the track has a padlock nobody can open. Can you deal with it? Yes. The padlock is opened or cut, depending on what it is and what you prefer, and a new one fitted if you want. A long-shackle padlock on a chain is easier to deal with than a lock box welded to the gate, so a photo helps. ### The lock of the house has not been turned for six months and the key will not move. What now? Do not force the key: a key snapped inside makes everything harder. A lock left unused can stiffen. Ring, and if you can get in another way, leave that door alone until it has been looked at. ### Can every outside door of the finca be on one key? Where those doors take euro cylinders, yes, with a set of cylinders keyed alike by the manufacturer. Padlocks and old mortice locks are usually separate. ### Is the countryside round Aspe further than you go?
